Reducing decision friction in on-chain swaps

Reducing decision friction in on-chain swaps

Most swap flows fail not because the underlying logic is complex, but because users are asked to make too many decisions before they feel confident enough to proceed. Scope: UX diagnosis · Interaction design · Frontend implementation

About the project

Swap flows often lose users before execution, not because the swap is difficult, but because the interface delays confidence.

When users are forced to reason through multiple inputs up front, momentum breaks and hesitation sets in. This project focused on shortening the distance between intent and action. By simplifying how a swap is expressed, the flow encourages earlier commitment while still supporting advanced scenarios. In comparable DeFi swap flows, reducing early hesitation typically improves completion rates by 15–30% and lowers failed transaction attempts.

Challanges

Smart contract behavior could not change, and advanced swap paths needed to remain accessible. At the same time, the flow had to feel immediately familiar to existing users to avoid retraining costs.

The existing interface asked users to think too much too early. Two token inputs required pre-calculation, token and network selection were treated as separate decisions, and validation appeared late in the flow. Users frequently paused mid-swap, second-guessed their inputs, or encountered errors only after attempting confirmation. The result was abandoned swaps and repeated failed attempts, despite the underlying logic being reliable.

Summary

Summary

The swap flow was redesigned around a single decisive input that makes intent clear from the start.

Token and network selection were unified into a single contextual control, reducing fragmented decisions. Validation moved earlier in the flow, so errors were resolved before commitment. Redundant confirmation steps were removed to maintain momentum once users felt confident. The result is a faster, more decisive swap experience with fewer errors and higher completion, while preserving the flexibility expected by advanced users.
